“Love WordPress News, my name is Doc and this is the Torque News Drop.

WordCamp Europe 2020 happened this weekend and the organizers did a fantastic job. Of course this was the first year that WordCamp Europe was a 100% virtual event, but that didn’t hurt attendance in any way. In fact, this year’s event had over 8,000 attendees, which is more than double last years event. That means that WordCamp Europe 2020 is officially the largest WordCamp ever. The event started off with an issue 700 WordPressers taking place in the contributor day.

One of the highlights of the event was Mattias Ventura’s question and answer segment with Matt Mullenweg. They discussed the future of the Gutenberg editor, which now is running on over 45 million websites, and gave a great demonstration of new Gutenberg features in WordPress 5.5. One of the most exciting updates is the ability to edit images directly in the post. You can resize, crop, add text, and more all in one place. The edits are actually made to the source image so it will look exactly the same on every platform. If you have 15 minutes, I recommend catching that demo up on WCEU’s YouTube page, I’ll try to post a link to it in the description.

Speaking of WordPress 5.5, which is expected to arrive in August 2020, Josepha Haden recently shared more details about team leads. Matt Mullenweg will be the lead, with Jake Spurlock as the coordinator and David Baumwald on Triage. WordPress 5.5 will also feature some huge new features like adding automatic updates for plugins and themes in core. It will also add a block directory and navigation block to core.

Josepha also made a few announcements about WordPress 5.6 that are really exciting. This major update includes an opt-in for automatic updates for major core releases, full-site editing in core, and a new default theme. One other exciting bit of news is that WordPress 5.6 will be made possible by an all-women release squad. Josepha tweeted a year ago that she would like to see an all women release squad by the end of 2020 and it looks like that is going to happen. 5.6 is currently scheduled for a December release. ”
