Small favour marketing is a better approach. And it's something you can continue doing forever. Solve a small problem for a client upfront, and then ask them if they have any bigger problems. If they do, and it's a problem your solution caters to, then you can sell them on that at a full price. The key is not to come across as desperate – "I'll build your website for free!" but helpful – "Hey, I noticed this issue, mind if I fix it for you real quick?"
