I recently started using Edge as my main browser. Before you move on, just give me a few minutes and let me tell you why. You may not know the full story and history of Microsoft Edge. I’m also going to tell you why I don’t think Edge is the best browser for web development.

  1. I use Firefox when I need to do CSS stuff. Style Editor and tooltips for unapplied properties are amazing features.

However, I switch to a Chromium browser whenever I need to check how the website looks like on a bigger screen. Firefox doesn't have zooming capabilities in their dev tools, unfortunately.

  2. A long time ie hater turned edge lover. It's been a pleasant experience so far. I use the collections feature quite extensively. Nifty feature to stash my open tabs quickly and have them open again later all at once.

  3. I recently discovered Edge's exceptional text to speech, but I was inspired to try switching completely by this video. Sleeping tabs sounds like a great idea, but I've noticed that any Youtube video I'm watching starts glitching/slowing/stopping as other tabs fall asleep. I'm on a Ryzen 3500U with integrated graphics. Anyone else have a chance to test this feature?

  4. I would love to use Edge – unfortunately it really doesnt want to play well with all my Linux machines / VMs. In some of them it just opens and the new tab is NEVER rendered. Worst of all, it doesn't even fire up the network part of it or whatnot, so even when I type an address (even a localhost one!) it simply refuses to connect. Like, FOR REAL? On Windows though, Edge is quite a decent alternative to Chrome.

  5. First of all, Edge seems to be nice. But… as a web developer for over a decade, who suffered from all the extra work because of extra implementations needed to make projects work for IE, I can’t just take a Microsoft browser serious as if nothing ever happened. That will take some years.

But I have to give credit to Microsoft for things like VSCode or Typescript, and especially for abandoning IE instead of trying to improve it, and going for the new chromium based edge version.

Btw, what I like best in all browsers is the ability to right click on tabs and hit close all 😉

  6. My favourite browser is firefox, because it can pretty print the JSON response… 😅 And the font size of dev tools is decent.. therefore my eyes don't have to work as hard as when dealing with dev tools in any chromium based browser.

  7. In most of the use cases a common dev will have in his/her work will be fulfilled by most of the browsers out there, like chrome, firefox, edge, brave, vivaldi etc. The reason why ppl choose one over the other I think is mostly a matter of preference and what market denotes. For example most of them will use chrome, but I really dont think it si more powerful than Firefox in 99% of the cases. To see the big difference between two in daily work you should either be working in a very niche tech or doing sth very advanced. Then of course ppl will like one browser more because they are used to some special toolset that the browser might offer and other offer it differently etc. As far as I am concerned as a dev I dont mind using any of those, the only reason would I would choose firefox over the others is privacy and also the ability to change stuff according to my needs, for example changing how the top bar looks like, place buttons in different places etc.

  8. I absolutely love Edge and have been using it for at least a year now. Thanks for highlighting it in this video. I definitely deserves to be looked at more.

  9. Edge's ability to customize devtools is awesome, and that makes it a better devtool than Chrome's. I love that it's possible to layout the tabs and create shortcuts in the sidebar.
I still use Chrome though since Edge is always going to be lagging behind with Chromium bug fixes and new features. Feels like there's always a Chromium issue that I'm waiting for to be closed, and the wait is longer in Edge unfortunately.

  10. thanks for sharing, def not bad to use edge nowadays! I worked with extensions at my job and it's been a lot of changes in the past year or two! well in a better direction *figners crossed

  11. Edge uses chakra as it's js engine and it fails more tests set based on ECMA specs by TC39 than Mozilla and chrome , so when website developers execute complex js code in edge browser it acts in a crazy way and it's far from being the fastest, but their ui/ux might be appealing since windows and edges ui/ux goes hand in hand

  12. The one thing that bugs me about edge is that it does not remember the zoom level once I close the browser. I know its a small thing but I have to change the zoom level every time I open the browser and I don't like that.

  13. My main browser is brave.
But, today I used edge and was really impressed by how far it came as a browser.
The tab title readability was way better in vertical tab panel and the ads restriction is quite similar to brave.
One major advantage, I thought was the tab suspension it's really fast. I use the suspender extension on any browser to save RAM. But, edge's built-in suspender is really very fast as compared to third-party extension. Due to which the RAM usage is really low. Just to give an idea, I opened 35 tabs with 12 tabs having video playbacks on youtube.

You ready for this…… RAM usage was just 500mb.
Although, brave + suspender extension provides 600-800mb ram usage with the same constraints.
Somehow, still can't trust edge but, definitely looking forward to it becoming better in future.
