I don't know where you got the story on the serif's but… Sorry, it's not true. Or at best it's an urban legend. Even Gutenberg was able to make beautiful and (for its time) intricate typefaces now known as textualis (a form of blackletter). More spesifically, the serif is there because calligraphers liked to decorate their letters with them, and then these decorations were copied by the typemakers and printers.

I'm fascinated by typography. I'm an active dip pen user, and I do some calligraphy. But I just can't wrap my head around typography. It's such a hard field to really master. I mean you can put in all the right things and measures into your design, and it still looks like shit.
