In this step-by-step overview, learn how to use GIMP. We start with how to download and install GIMP. We then explore the interface, including the toolbox, tool options, color selection, docks / tabs, and the menu system. Next, we look at all the options to customize the experience, from resizing docks, to turning on or off single window mode, to changing icon colors, and adjusting the theme from dark to light.

We continue by creating a new file and saving it. We then navigate through the canvas using various short cut keys. We then load some sample files, learn about layers, arrange the layers, and apply different opacities. We add text, use the selection tools, align objects, use brushes, filters, and colors. By the end of this video, you’ll have foundational knowledge of how to use GIMP to start editing images. And best of all, you’ll have your first image created in GIMP… a poster for the Kevin Cookie Company!

  1. 1. you should have covered patterns and getting things to stick while transforming the layer its on.
    2. should have covered how to make your 2 cookies actually look the same; your logo looks pale in comparison.. would have been a good way to show cutting up pieces of a individual file to color match things and then re-splice and align so its all uniform.. ie make cookies look the same, make your logo banner match cookie monster.
    3. wish you covered some perspective / 3d transformation stuff… even just a few tips on where to poke around to get started and making things look correct TO SCALE.. many people need to take multiple photos that were not shot from the exact same angle or perspective but need to make them match up and thats a pretty key tool/skill

  2. Hi Kevin. Your tutorial is very good and I love it. I'm not familiar with Photoshop type softwares and after downloading GIMP software I tried and could have done something wrong where the screen became blank. I cannot get it back to the usual screen. Can you advise how I do it so can start practicing again. Sorry for the dumb request and appreciate your advise.

  3. Good evening, I want to ask something because I can't find the solution. I have a 960*720 image and I want to make it 100KB in size and 640*450 in dimensions. I change the dimensions and in the quality I put 100, but it turns out that the image has a size of 89.5 KB. What am I doing wrong? Thank you very much

  4. The interface of the software is incredibly small. I can not see the tools well or brushes and I have good eye sight. The text on the menu bar gets washed out with the black mouse highlight in dark mode.
