Can you change careers and become a software engineer in 2022? Is this still a realistic goal?

Absolutely! Thousands and thousands have people have put in the work and shifted careers into software development, many of those without degrees.

I did it at 34.

In this video, I want to share two paths for those looking to change careers to Software Engineer in 2022 and specifically one I think is the fastest route in getting your foot in the door.

  1. Regarding AWS and prior experience, if you are not "computer-savvy" or do not have a basic to intermediate understanding of servers or computer networking, etc. then shoot to pass the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam first (alongside Python of course). This certification is largely fundamentals of cloud computing and will help a lot as a prerequisite to an associate level cert.

  2. Great video! I'm in RealEstate but I understand the importance of tech. I just don't have 5 years to sit in class. I noticed tech jobs are all I see, and I'm curious why that is? Are there really just not enough people in Tech or is it a high turnover industry?

  3. I have worked in the Medical industry for the past 10 years and i am not getting anywhere I want this career change so bad!! where to begin? I went to codecademy and it was alright i guess.. bootcamps are expensive.. I am so glad i found you and the awesome advise you have. Thank you

  4. Thanks man, m 34 just started learning python few weeks back, loving it Bt was thinking abt wht next. Now m clear again why I choosed Python n cloud of course. Thanks for your motivation man. ❤

  5. Hi Travis! I am on the webdev route taking CS50 course first to have soliv CS concepts. I was thinking about this same exact path before going through the webdev route mainly because nobody tried that with no degree and no IT experience and tons of people said that no one would hire junior devops with no it background and no way to demonstrate their skill appart from certs which dont matter in interviews. My question is how do you convince an employer to hire you as a self taught devops or cloud engineer since you cant have a portfolio like on the webdev path? How's it possible to actually show work that you can build to be able to convince somebody?

  6. I am on this journey.
Around 3 months ago, I started with 100 days of code in Python and I am on day33 almost at 50% of the course.
It is the best course you can ever find for sure and I am a bit confident with coding in Python now.

I will soon start on AWS journey and see where this leads me to.

  7. Wow this info is gold. I started learning python from Angela 2 months ago and just came across your channel today. Thank you so much for the advise Travis 🙏

  8. I stumbled upon this video by chance and I'm so glad I did! The message and creativity behind this work are truly inspiring. It's amazing to see how talented creators like Travis can use their platform to spread positive vibes and make a difference. This video has definitely brightened my day and I can't wait to see what other awesome content you come up with in the future!

  9. this has saved my life. coming from a business strategy background, yet in love with tech, I have always been put off learning any programming language because my strategy brain could not grasp why learn all these languages? What is the strategic position for opportunity in the future if I just keep swallowing up every language. So I tried HTML. I dumped it. I tried Cybersecurity. I dumped it. I tried Data analysis. The many things to learn just tore me apart. Honestly, for the first time, I feel like a new born with so much energy to start life afresh along this path you have shown. Now at 38, I am inspired by your story and strategic advice. I am rushing ahead to follow you on LinkedIn and others

  10. I'm 24 and severely doubting my decision to go into an urban planning degree. The money won't be as good, nor will the potential progression. I also feel like I will be unsatisfied in the job. I'm considering switching to computer science and making my way into IT (with the aim of software engineering). This helped as I'm going to have to start practicing programming soon. Thank you!

  11. I am starting over in my 50's. I was in manufacturing as a welder and manager for most of my life. I was injured for the 3rd time of my life and decided that was enough. 6 months into learning programming, it's going well, just looking forward to a company to take that chance on me haha

  12. I’m a business graduate currently in baking industry…I wanna change my career to Software engineering but have no basics…Is it possible to switch from banking to IT ? I’m 25 currently

  13. Im not saying its impossible to do it within six months its just that you already had prior knowlege in the field for many years. Which made it a lot easier to learn all those concepts within six months time frame. Starting with zero experience and expected to finished it within six months is unrealistic. For example, a photoshop artist can learn to be a cgi animator within 6 months. But coming from someone with only experience in drawing stick figures is going to take a lot longer than 6 months to be a cgi animator.

  14. Interesting path. I’d be concerned about devops getting automated out. We have so many backend as a service tools these days like firebase. IMO the user experience is the most bulletproof. Also devops is not very startuppy. So it’s a different path than I’ve done but I do find it interesting as a path.

  15. Is the Boto 3 course on Udemy the same as the AWS developer one, or another one aside from the CCP and CSA? Thank you and appreciate the advice on which route to take
